Muslim Center History

Introduction

In May 1975, a few brothers gathered together to establish a weekly Islamic School and a mosque for the frowing Muslim Community in this area.

History

With a modest apartment at 41 st Avenue, Flushing, the Muslim Center came into existence. The Muslim Organization of North America appointed one brother as the first administrator of the Center and three other brothers as Advisors. The first general meeting was held on the 1st Sunday of November 1975. It was decided to have the Center incorporated so that it would function independently. On the first Sunday of January 1976 the first Executive Board was elected with the following thirteen members: Syed Anwer Hussain (President), Anis Ahmed Baig (Vice President), Mohammad Tariq Sherwani (General secretary), Syed Mobin Ahmad (Treasurer), M. Shamsheer Ali Baig, Ebrahim S. Lunat, Syed Shahid Ali, Mohammad Haider Imam, Mozaffar Hussain, Muzaffar Qureshi, Kamal Ahmad Khan, Mumtaz H. Khan, and Muhammad Hussain.

The Center has gradually evolbed into a full-fledged Community Center and a democratically operated, non-profit Islamic and educational institution. It has tax exempt status with the IRS, NYS, and NYC. It is a member of the Council of Masajid and of the Majlis-Ash-Shura, New York.

In November 1979 a one family house was purchased at Geranium Avenue for congregational Salat and day to day activities of the center ar a cost of $79,000.00

Once the Center acquired its own premises, a Board of Trustees, aaccording to the Constitution of the Center, had to be appointed. The members of the first Board of Trustees, elected in November 1979 were: Syed Anwer Hussain (Chairman), Ebrahim S. Lunat (Treasurer), M. Shamsheer Ali Baig, M. Haider Imam, and Mohammad Tariq Sherwani.

Organization

The Center is run by the Executive Committee one third of which is elected by the General Assembly, every two years. The officers of the Executive Committe are in turn, elected by the Committe members every two years. There is also a Board of Trustees responsible for the Capital assets of the Center. The Trustees are elected by the Executive Committee for a period of ten years. Most of the activities of the Center are planned, approved and implemented by the Exective Committee with the help of the Director and other staff members of the Center. In addition, various Functional Committees are formed to foster a greater community involvement in the Center's activities and its social services
